Just a bunch of fun pics to post. Jen introduced some toys to the whelping pool this morning and all of the puppies were like little zombies smelling the living...they all turned toward the toys as one and began to march over to them as a group - it was hilarious to watch:

Meanwhile, as usual, over in the younger pool, lots of sleeping going on! All 4 of Trinity's pups topped 400 grams on day 10 (average weight at their age is 670), so they're definitely growing, just slowly.

Yep! We've got all of the primary K locus colors - Black, Brindle, & Red. No dilute Blues, but some may carry it from Theo (from granny Bella). I find it interesting we only got 2 color patterns: a bunch of parti pups, and only one solid - no extreme whites like daddy Bok, and no Irish Marked like the late grandpa Jett. They're like jellybeans, for sure - while you can predict some of it - you never know exactly what you'll get in any litter!
DeleteIt's also interesting that this time around, Trinity had a red pup in Emma. In her first litter, though the possibility of red was there, but she had only brindles and blacks.
DeleteToys! All the pups are really beautiful, love how their colors are sharpening. Can you say more about the available litter box? How does this system progress for the pups?
ReplyDeleteEdited: Yes! So, after our first litter (we used puppy pads - what a nightmare), we learned to use puppy litter (either Purina's brand, or Petco's brand - which is what I use - Sophresh). It's recycled newspaper pellets and is treated to draw them to it.
DeleteWe use a big puppy litter pan in the pool, just to begin to get them used to it. You can see it, with the litter pellets in in, in a few of the pics.
The first 2 weeks or so, it's mostly about us putting them in there whenever they wake up, whenever they've just played, or right after they eat (typical puppy potty times)...or any time we see them 'thinking' about going.
Eventually, they begin to just gravitate to it on their own, with the natural whippet instinct to stay clean. Interestingly, the prize for actually going to it and using on their own a few times first goes to Agent 99 and Alfred Dreyfus this time around.
Once they graduate out of the pool entirely and just into the whelping pen (coming soon for Theo's pups!), we set up one side of the pen with a row of litter pans and they tend to be really pretty good about using them by then!
Of course, the goal is to get them to go outside, but with a winter litter, they may have to use the boxes indoors more than a summer litter. If the weather holds, we will get the pups going outside on warm days around week 5 or 6 to start exploring more space and learning about pottying outside. :)

DeleteYep - but even for winter litters, we don't recommend keeping litter boxes going long once they get to their new homes....it takes much longer for them to 'get it' to not go in the house if you use litter for too long!
DeleteIf we keep anyone from these litters, we'll pick up the litter box at 8 or 9 weeks and they'll transition to pottying outside right along with the 'big whips'. :) We'll just be sure they have sweaters/coats, and of course go outside with him or her and bring 'em right back in after they do their business on cold days.
When we got Upson on Halloween, I think we only used the litter box for about a well and then straight outside. He figured out how to use the dog door in a couple of days and only had a couple of accidents in the house. He was so easy to potty train!! He almost did it himself!

:) I love this, Heather! We hear the same from most of our puppy owners - the transition from boxes to the outside is usually pretty smooth. Of course, lots of supervision is important in the beginning, but most whippets tend to be pretty easy to potty train - especially if they've got an adult dog or 2 around to teach them!
DeleteZombie puppies, 😂😂😂. Dreyfus already chewing on his bed...hahahahaha. Those pups are gorgeous! So nice to look at photos of beautiful puppies after a crappy afternoon yesaterday so thank you. And it looks like Theo's pups have lovely round heads! Love that. Keep up the good work Trinity and pups. So wonderful to see them continuing go grow. ❤️❤️❤️
