Let's talk about dewclaws!
You'll notice in the upcoming pics and videos that we've left dewclaws on, just as we've done with our last 4 litters.
The whippet standard allows for both dogs with them, and with them removed. We previously removed them around day 2 or 3, so those of you with older Horsetooth Whippets probably have dogs without dewclaws, however...
...After a LOT of research - and keeping 3 pups of our own with them on - we agree that they are actually a useful, vital digit - like a thumb!
There are multiple ligaments that run from dewclaw to wrist, and those help support the dog's entire wrist when turning and running fast (a whippet specialty).
Our 3 girls with dews - Brie, Scarlet, and Lyla - all definitely use them to 'hold things' while chewing, and it's starting to be shown in the agility world that dogs without their dews have a higher incidence of arthritis in their wrists - even at young ages!
